Former Deputy President of Kenya Rigathi Gachagua has accused Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Vice Chairperson Fahima Araphat Abdallah of attempting to manipulate the upcoming Magarini Constituency by-election in Kilifi County, scheduled for November 27.
In a strongly worded letter to IEBC Chairperson Erastus Edung Ethekon, Gachagua alleged that Abdallah traveled to Magarini on November 21, where she “bullied, intimidated, and coerced” electoral officials into handing over the full list and contacts of presiding officers. He further claimed Abdallah met Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung’aro at a Malindi hotel to discuss bribery deposits aimed at securing favorable officers, and instructed officials to collaborate closely with the governor.
Labeling the actions as “corrupt, covert means” to undermine the poll, Gachagua demanded:
- Immediate replacement of all Magarini presiding officers
- A full investigation and disciplinary action against Abdallah
- Her resignation as IEBC Vice Chairperson
- Protection for IEBC staff from harassment
Gachagua, who is backing Stanley Karisa Kenga, the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) candidate, cited the 2022 Magarini election—nullified by the Supreme Court over irregularities—as precedent for vigilance. He warned that the alleged conduct threatens IEBC’s credibility ahead of the 2027 general elections, adding: “The Gen-Zs are the pillar of transformation… do not feign ignorance.”
Abdallah, who hails from the Coast region, has not commented on the allegations, and the IEBC has yet to issue a response. The by-election, triggered by the death of MP Harrison Kombe, is seen as a critical test for the reformed commission under Ethekon, with UDA’s Olekama Mwangi emerging as the main rival candidate.
